HOW TO USE READ LATER FEATURE IN GOOGLE CHROME

In this article, we have discussed the ways with which you can use the “Read Later” feature in Chrome. The Firefox users might be aware of the service named “Pocket” that has a neat integration with the browser for bookmarking the web pages in order to read later. Just like Firefox, Chrome is now catching up with Firefox and has come up with a feature named “Reading List” or “Read Later” in order to help individuals save web pages so that they can quickly access them by putting in minimal effort.

Use Read Later Feature in Chrome

Just like the other hidden Google Chrome features, we will use a Chrome Flag to enable the Read Later feature. The “Read Later” feature can be used on both the handset and desktop version of Chrome. So, we have listed the steps for both separately. You may skip to the part depending upon the platform you are using in order to browse the web.

Read Later in Google Chrome Desktop

Below are the steps mentioned in order to enable “Read Later” in Chrome for Desktop:

  1. The feature was first introduced as Read later on Chrome, and since then, it has been renamed to “Reading List” in the recent Canary builds. Irrespective of its updated name, you can search for “Read Later” in chrome://flags in order to turn on the flag. Further, after searching for the flag, select the option “Enabled” and then restart Chrome. Alternatively, you can access the flag directly by pasting the address: chrome://flags/#read-later, in the address bar of Chrome.
  2. Once you have enabled it, you can use it with the help of the steps mentioned below: –

In order to add a web page to the reading list, right-click the opened tab, and select the option “Add tab to reading list.” This can also be achieved using the bookmarks button. You need to tap on the bookmark icon and further select the option “Add to reading list.”

  • Once the procedure mentioned above is carried out, a new “Reading List” option will appear in the bookmarks bar present on Chrome’s top right side. Make sure you enable the option “Show Bookmarks Bar” to get access to the reading list anywhere within Chrome. On clicking the reading list, you will notice the Read and unread pages appearing in the separately listed sections.
  • In case the article has been read by you elsewhere, you can mark it as Read. This can be done by pressing the “Mark as read” button. In a similar way, individuals can also mark articles as unread if they want to read those articles again. Tapping on the ‘X’ icon appearing adjacent to the “Mark as read” button helps remove the webpage from the reading list.

Read Later in Google Chrome Mobile

You need to follow the steps mentioned below to enable the “Read Later” feature:

  1. Similar to the approach followed on the desktop, the process for enabling the “Read Later” feature on mobile devices involves turning on the flag “Read Later” using the address chrome://flags. Further, turn on the flag and then restart Chrome.
  2. Once you have enabled the flag, you can then start adding web pages to your reading list. This can be done using two ways. In the first method, you need to long-press the link and click “Read later.” To add the pages to the reading list using the other method, you need to tap on the Bookmarks icon.
  3. Individuals can then access their reading list by going to “Bookmarks” and further clicking on the “Reading List.”
  4. Similar to the desktop version of Chrome, you can mark an article as Read or unread on the mobile version of Chrome. Also, you can quickly delete the links from the reading list if needed.

So, these were the steps with the help of which you can use the “Read Later” feature to save the links on Chrome.  Further, you may enable or disable the feature accordingly as required. This feature can currently be accessed using the Chrome flag; however, we hope the feature will be enabled by default in the upcoming future, hopefully with Chrome 90.
